Khortytsia Island is one of the most remarkable places in Ukraine. The island is located behind the Dnieper rapids near Zaporizhzhia, is the pride and symbol of the Ukrainian Cossacks.
Built in the 1550s by Dmytro Baida Vyshnevetskyi on the island Mala Khortytsia first fortifications had a great influence on the consolidation of the Cossacks, which in the 1580s received the name "Zaporizka Sich".
The huge fortress became a model for the future fortifications of Sichi and the central point from which the Cossacks set out on campaigns, and in 1648, the liberation war led by B. Khmelnytskyi began from the island of Khortytsia.
